Logline
"Marti and I" is a feature film that defies genres. It is a historical intervention project. "Marti and I" re-interprets a political icon in order to rescue the man behind it from virtual obscurity. It is intended as a work that renounces machismo and its stronghold in historical icons and on history as written. It is expected to be a feature film, a web-based, interactive platform and a series of online and live performances.
Treatment
“Marti and I” opens with a lonely candle in a dark room. Melodramatically, as in a silent film, Marti's “lonely and trembling soul” (a famous line from one of his most popular poem) finds a movie camera and walks up to it. “Who stole six pages from my diary?”
Indeed, six pages were torn from Marti's diary-- possibly by his military superiors-- hours before his possessions were gathered at the army encampment where he perished in battle. What truth did those pages hold?
The film in "Marti and I" appears degraded, cut and scratched. Old photographs appear defaced or altered. Many frames are missing. Shot in the fixed camera point of view style of Edison and Lumier, the film gains a backstage point of view. It even re-assembles Muybridge's photographs into short animated sequences to make us reconsider the “historically recorded” birth of motion pictures, which attributes this credit to Edison and Lumiere instead.
"Marti and I" is not a 'traditional' documentary. It is a visual essay infused with poetry and historical research. The website component of "Marti and I" will be a depository of explorations and interactive exercises to explore different readings of history and historical icons through 2.0 tools. These explorations could expose conflicting recordings of history in areas of conflict around the world and on how these disparate interpretations of role models have, may or will affect our identities.
“Didn’t St. john remind us that men are not gods but more like books, their pages open to all?” wrote a young José Martí. “Words have a layer that envelops them. It is necessary to go to the body of words.” As the film progresses, I visually transform Marti into the subject of his most famous poem, 'La bailarina Española' (The Flamenco Dancer). Gender politics is an area of interest central to "Marti and I." What is a man? What is a woman?Who defines and re-invents these roles? These are universally popular discourses that can lead quickly to other discussions about social sciences, cultural identity, discrimination and history, to name a few.
Thesis/Synopsis
Jose Marti is the greatest literary and political figure that Cuba has ever produced. Marti was an intellectual, a poet and a revolutionary figure accredited with leading Cuba's independence from Spain in the nineteenth century. He is referred to worldwide as "The Apostle." Today, people living in 'Communist Cuba' as well as in Miami's 'Cuban community in exile' both praise Marti's revolutionary spirit and have claimed him their hero despite their ideological differences. Such opposite interpretations of his persona are a testament to Marti's true, dual nature. They are the inspiration for "Marti and I".
"Marti and I" is a feature film that reclaims Marti from a mythical, patriarchal grave by hinting at the less publicized associations and facts about Marti's life: his "brotherly" love for his best friend, with whom he lived for five years in exile; the letters to his mother confessing that women were 'like stone' to him; his friendship with Walt Whitman, which led to the first translation to the Spanish of 'Leaves of Grass' in 1887, a text now considered by homosexual historians the earliest 'gay' manifesto; his little known essay defending Oscar Wilde; his own bouts with alcoholism and the interpretation of his death as a suicide in order to protect his life's work in martyrdom.
Stylistically, "Marti and I" draws great inspiration on David Deitcher's essays and curated photographs of men together during the gold rush in the United States (1940-1918). In looking at these photographs of men showing affection in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and in reading their correspondence it is clear that men valued and protected their friendships even if they went on to fulfill their ‘societal duties.’ Mr. Deitcher proposes that it was the introduction of homosexuality as a pathological condition in medical books at the beginning of the twentieth century that suddenly put a stop to these socially accepted affections between men.
“The introduction of photography to the United States in 1840 coincided with a surprisingly broad-minded attitude toward same-sex intimacy,” comments Detcher, “Some observers may immediately presume that these photographs represent visual evidence of an implicitly validating gay male history that they have elsewhere been denied (…) However, throughout most of the nineteenth century, the word "homosexual"-- and the concept it represents today -- did not exist. The words "homosexual" and "homosexuality" first appeared in German in 1869 (…) At the same time, Dr. Carl Friedrich Otto Westphal coined the synonymous "contrary sexual feeling" and the first appearance of "homo-sexual" in English dates from Charles Gilbert Chaddock’s 1892 translation of Richard von Krafft-Ebbing’s classic “Psychopathia sexualis,” which had been published in German in 1886.”
Was it a coincidence that the prevalence, acceptance and documentation (through photography, mostly) of same-sex intimacy and the popularity, if not success, of the literary men involved coincidentally came to an end? Phrenology, now a defunct field of study, was developed around 1800 by Franz Joseph Gall. It was once considered a science by which the personality traits of a person were determined by "reading" bumps and fissures in the skull. Curiously, in 1849, leading phrenologist Fowler mapped the head of the young Walt Whitman. Six years later, Fowler’s publishing company produced the first edition of Whitman’s classic “Leaves of Grass,” a text that accepts the corporeal principles of phrenology, while celebrating the emotional expansiveness of the "body electric."
Phrenology’s popularity came to an end, coincidentally with the introduction of homosexuality, mutating at the beginning of the twentieth century into the sister science of criminology. Was science used to manipulate history the way some scientists also used phrenology to promote racism, perhaps for economic gain and control? If so, how has this had an effect on our society today? Can we expect similar changes to follow in the development of hormone therapy?
